Caffé Italia

Caffé Italia

After a busy day filled with meetings, appointments, and errands, I couldn’t wait to kick back and enjoy a meal made by somebody else. Perfect time to visit restaurant #19! We headed over to Caffé Italia for a late dinner, and the hostess sat us at a dimly lit booth next to the windows. Our waiter wrote his name in crayons on the paper tablecloth and returned a few minutes later to take our order.   Continue reading.

Fluffy Donuts

Fluffy Donuts

As soon as I checked the Natsoulas Gallery Café off of the List, I started bouncing around more than a little kid on Christmas morning. “Donuts! Donuts! We get donuts!” I chanted in my head aloud, dancing around the house. Although morning meetings at work prevented us from going for breakfast, we sped over to restaurant #18 at noon for our sugar fix.

I nearly sprinted into Fluffy Donuts and pressed my nose flat up against the glass display case. With so many options—glazed, frosted, sprinkles, coconut, crumb, bar, twist, old-fashioned—I just couldn’t make up my mind… I wanted them all! But when a line began forming behind us, I played eenie-meanie-miney-mo and placed our order.   Continue reading.

Natsoulas Gallery Café

Natsoulas Gallery Cafe

Although the Natsoulas Gallery Café isn’t exactly a restaurant or eatery, I still penciled it in on the List because they do serve drinks. (And someone wrote a review on Yelp, which I used along with Daviswiki as my source for all Davis restaurants.) After meeting under the mosaic man out front, we cautiously entered the deserted gallery.   Continue reading.

Pinkberry

September 15, 2012

With all of the moving madness and ceaseless unpacking, I blurted out nearly every excuse to stop and rest that passed through my brain. “It’s hot, let’s take a break!” “I’m sweaty, let’s take a break!” “My arms hurt, let’s take a break!” “I’m hungry, let’s take a break!” That last one finally worked, and I grabbed my keys off of the counter to drive us to restaurant #16.

As we pulled opened the glass doors, the servers called out, “Welcome to Pinkberry!” from behind the counter. We approached slowly, scanning the menu board as we walked. After one sample apiece, we placed our orders.   Continue reading.

Thai Canteen

Thai Canteen

As August changes to September, this town buzzes with activity. Swarms of U-Haul vans circle around, carting college kids and their Craig’s List furniture from one apartment to the next. By joining in this yearly ritual and prematurely packing my pots and pans into cardboard boxes (yes, super smart for someone who loves to cook…), I called up a friend when my stomach growled at dinnertime and headed to restaurant #15.

We briefly stood in line at Thai Canteen before placing our order, grabbing the number, and snagging a table beneath the black and white mural wall. After ten minutes, a server delivered our dishes.   Continue reading.

Sushi Unlimited

Sushi Unlimited

I biked clear across town in the blistering summer heat to visit restaurant #14. Since my old roommate called dibs on sushi at lunch a few weeks ago, we entered Sushi Unlimited together and snagged a table next to the window.

The waitress waited nearly 10 minutes to take our order, so we read the descriptions of every hand roll, maki roll, nigiri, and 50% off roll. (Four pages just of sushi!) I easily narrowed down my options—shrimp and shellfish allergies sometimes come in handy for an indecisive girl—but my friend puzzled over her choice a little longer.   Continue reading.

Davis Noodle City

August 9, 2012

On a warm summer evening, we strolled past the popular Sophia’s and through the door of restaurant #13, Davis Noodle City. The hostess greeted us with a smile, invited us to sit anywhere, and poured us tall glasses of water. When I pulled on my jacket—a big temperature shock from the Davis heat to the air-conditioned store!—she immediately offered to turn off the little fan unit behind me. And with that, she won me over.   Continue reading.
