Caffé Italia

 

After a busy day filled with meetings, appointments, and errands, I couldn’t wait to kick back and enjoy a meal made by somebody else. Perfect time to visit restaurant #19! We headed over to Caffé Italia for a late dinner, and the hostess sat us at a dimly lit booth next to the windows. Our waiter wrote his name in crayons on the paper tablecloth and returned a few minutes later to take our order.

We waited a long time for our food considering only two other tables were occupied, so we amused ourselves by playing tic-tac-toe and drawing pictures on the table. Meet Bubbles, our goldfish.

Anyway, I chose the small veggie pizza with spinach instead of mushrooms (gotta love allergies). A generous amount of black olives and raw onions covered the thick layer of melted mozzarella cheese. Fresh tomatoes, spinach, and green bell peppers lay over the other vegetables, and a sprinkling of powdered Parmesan completed the toppings. I barely saw or tasted any tomato sauce (they must have reserved it all for my partner’s dinner), but the thin crust was nicely browned and flavorful.

My companion ordered the pasta arrabbiatta, or “angry pasta.” A heaping portion of tomato sauce coated the al dente cavatappi noodles, but the chef was in a forgiving mood that evening… We excavated the sauce with our forks, finding barely any garlic and less than 10 miniscule bits of prosciutto. My partner finished the plate, but we agreed that we preferred his own homemade red sauce to that of the angry pasta.

 

Caffé Italia is a family-owned restaurant with an old, homey atmosphere. They accommodate their younger patrons with kids’ meals and crayons to color on the tabletops, while they offer a variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner dishes for their adult customers as well. The portions are large, the staff is friendly, but I think I’ll stick to the pizza and make my own pasta at home.
