Taqueria Davis

December 17, 2012

Taqueria Davis

Most Friday evenings, I barely peddle into the driveway before collapsing on the couch. I’ll spend almost the entire night there, only shuffling into the kitchen to microwave a frozen meal or plodding into the bathroom to brush my teeth before bed. On the rare occasion that I summon up enough energy to drive someplace for dinner, we often go to Taqueria Davis.

Although I usually order the same soft tacos during every trip, I felt obligated to pick something new for my “official” visit to restaurant #25. After a minute or two of scanning the menu board and a little advice from the owner, I decided on a new dish and picked up some chips and salsa while waiting.   Continue reading.

Hometown Chinese Food

Hometown Chinese Food

After changing my strategy, a friend pointed out a very obvious flaw: I would probably procrastinate on dining at restaurants with food I dislike and end up with 17 Chinese establishments to finish off the List! Disturbed by the possibility of three months of cream cheese wontons and fried orange chicken, I resolved to visit a Chinese place for restaurant #24.   Continue reading.

Sugar Daddies

Sugar Daddies

I’m a dessert dragon. Just like they hoard their gold, I hoard my sweets—and one is never enough. So two days after my rich strawberry and nutella crêpe, my sugar craving returned, and I skimmed through my new list for a satisfying solution. When my eyes stopped at “Sugar Daddies,” I called up my guy and asked if he was interested.

Already downtown and only a block or two away, he offered to take my order and stop by restaurant #23 for me before driving home. Swamped with papers to grade, I quickly agreed, and he knocked on the door 20 minutes later with a plastic cupcake box in hand.   Continue reading.

Crepeville

Crepeville

With my big chocolate craving, I begged my guy to accompany me to Crepeville last weekend. He readily agreed, and we pulled on the knife door handle of restaurant #22 before staring up at the coloring chalk menu boards and placing our order.   Continue reading.

A New Strategy

November 6, 2012

To say my life is busy would be an understatement. I’m buried under a To Do List that’s longer than I am tall (I know, I’m only 5’3”, but still!) and constantly scheduling meetings, grading papers, and biking around town for library books and groceries. Zombified by 4 pm every day with another 3 hours of work to go, my sub-zero energy levels barely provide enough juice for me to microwave a frozen entrée for dinner, let alone spoon it into my mouth without falling asleep.

Which meant that my 5 unused brain cells got rather stressed out about my lack of attention to this blog. How could I give you any mouthwatering reviews if I couldn’t even stay awake long enough to place an order? But I didn’t have time… I didn’t have time… I didn’t have…

Wait. What if I reorganized the List? Instead of following the randomly generated order, what if I grouped them by category so I could fit the places into my time schedule, instead of trying (and failing miserably) to fit my schedule to them?

Davis restaurants by category

So I did. And now it’ll be a guessing game as to what comes next… But I’ll give you a hint for this one! I was definitely craving a chocolatey dessert over the weekend.

Where in Davis did this hungry blogger go?…

Cindy’s

Cindy's

One dreary morning, my guy and I finally synched up our schedules to overlap long enough for a quick visit to restaurant #21. We buckled ourselves into my car and drove to Cindy’s on the outskirts of town. As we pulled open the glass door, a server behind the counter called out for us to sit at the first empty booth, and a waitress tossed menus on the table.   Continue reading.

Raja’s Tandoor

Raja's Tandoor

After a long and grueling week left me listlessly sprawled on the sofa, I nearly cancelled my dinner at restaurant #20. But curiosity and the company (and a little guilt too… I haven’t written a review in so long!) forced me to roll off of the couch. I pulled on my boots, reached for my car keys, and drove downtown.

My friend beat me to Raja’s Tandoor and snagged an outdoor table overlooking the pedestrians strolling down the sidewalk below. The owner himself stopped by to drop off menus and water glasses. Once we scanned the colorful pictures of each plate, he returned to take our order.   Continue reading.
